On behalf of the Safe Motherhood Network Federation, I am pleased to share this publication which documents our work from early 2009 to the June 2011 period. This Bi-annual Report has only been able to report programmes coordinated by SMNF’s Central Secretariat in Kathmandu. A large body of work that our Members have undertaken by their own initiative has not been reported due to incomplete documentation. In the near future we hope to be able to include in our reports all the work that is being done by our members at the grass-roots to further the cause of safe motherhood and newborn health by mainstreaming them in other existing programmes or by focusing their own initiatives in these two key important issues.

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all the Office Bearers, Board Members, dedicated volunteers and staff for making this reporting period productive and full of activities. The Federation’s success rests on the commitment of each member and staff.

I would like to sincerely thank the Government of Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population for their partnership, encouragement and goodwill towards the SMNF. Nepal’s extraordinary progress towards MDGs 4 & 5 is due to the visionary leadership provided by this Ministry.

Last but not the least, SMNF wishes to thank the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood for providing us a visible global platform for advocacy for the rights of pregnant women, mothers and their newborns.
